Familiar Strangers
Even as their countries moved toward war in 1846, people from the United States and Mexico visited each other frequently. Some traveled to make money. Others, for adventure. Some were forced out of their countries. Others went as diplomats.
Their travels tell the story of relations between the United States and Mexico as those on the ground experienced them--and form the core of my dissertation in the History Ph.D. program at George Mason University.
This site contains primary sources related to this topic. Many of these primary sources have not been digitized nor compiled together. This site's primary purpose is to accompany my dissertation, but I hope that the sources that I bring together here will prove useful to others doing academic, genealogical, or just-for-fun research on the people who traveled between the two countries.
