Institution

The Design Minds, Inc., for the Fauquier County (Virginia) Department of Parks & Recreation

While working at The Design Minds, Inc., I developed content for interpretive signage and sourced images and music for a recreated Depression-era gold mining camp.

An exhibition panel called Gold and (Quick)Silver, describing the process of extracting gold from ore.

What I Did

Historical research & image sourcing

Because little research had been conducted on Virginia gold mining, a colleague and I visited local historical societies in Virginia’s gold mining region and spoke with experts to pull together information.

Sourced images from various repositories and negotiated image rights.

Sourced music from a Fauquier County musician from the era when gold mining was active.

Exhibition content development & exhibition writing

Updated the interpretive plan through each phase of the project.

Wrote a large portion of the exhibition text, and edited based on comments from others at the firm and the client.

The Results

  • Visitors to the Gold Mining Museum gained a greater understanding of their surroundings.
