Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (now Capital Jewish Museum)

To accompany the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington’s Northern Virginia outreach efforts and a Civil War exhibition that traveled to Alexandria’s history museum, I created a walking tour of Jewish sites in Old Town Alexandria.

What I Did

Researched Jewish history in Alexandria

Reviewed JHSGW’s reference files and existing materials on Jewish life in Old Town Alexandria from the 19th century to the present.

Created & led the tour

Mapped highlight stories to locations.

Walked the tour route to find physical remnants of the stories included in the tour and figure out the distance and timing.

Debuted the tour with a pilot program to accompany the exhibition’s debut at the Alexandria history museum, then began to conduct it regularly.

Over the next few years, I trained volunteers and fellow staff to lead the tour, as demand grew.

Created a brochure

I managed creation of a brochure of the sites covered in the tour, allowing for a self-guided taste of the content.

The Results

  • The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington continued to offer the tour following my departure for another job.
