Institution

Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (now Capital Jewish Museum)

When an exhibition on Jewish life in Civil War Washington proved too unwieldy to travel to many venues, I led efforts to create a poster version and an online version.

A poster exhibition mounted on several portable walls.

What I Did

Managed projects

Worked with the Society’s contracted web designer who built an Omeka website to host the online exhibition.

Ensured the online exhibition was launched in time for the 150th anniversary of Ulysses S. Grant’s order to expel Jews in areas under his control, hosting a talk with a scholar on that occasion.

Adapted content for different media

Adapted exhibition text and selected images from the exhibition to go on the posters.

Directed an intern who uploaded images for the online exhibition.

Adapted interpretive content to the Web.

Designed posters

Prepared an idea for a poster exhibition for the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington’s executive director to pitch successfully to a donor.

Designed the posters in InDesign, adapting the larger exhibition’s design.

Managed the traveling exhibition

Ordered the posters and frames, mounting the posters myself.

Reached out to synagogues and community centers about hosting the poster exhibition.

Installed the posters in synagogues and community centers.

The Results

  • The original exhibition created in 2008 was accessible in different venues for several years thereafter.

  • The Society began to take part in Civil War commemorations, becoming more enmeshed with other historic sites in the city.
