Ford’s Theatre Society

Ford’s Theatre needed data on how visitors reacted to its exhibitions in order to make decisions about future interpretation. I managed two efforts to gather data.

A group of people discuss an interpretive sign on an easel.

What I Did

Managed projects

Contracted evaluators.

Served as point-of-contact between the evaluators and Ford’s Theatre.

Collected data

Undertook data collection and transmission to the evaluators.

Supervised interns and other staff who took part in data collection.

Reported the results of evaluation to other staff and stakeholders.

Improvised an evaluation

When an evaluator fell ill just before a session with a student group, I quickly improvised an activity to gauge their favorite objects, images, and stories from their visits: They created mini-exhibitions using 3 images, 3 objects, and 3 stories they felt would be most important and engaging for their classmates who had to miss the field trip.

The Results

  • Ford’s Theatre gained a trove of data to make future interpretive decisions.

  • As opportunities presented themselves, staff made changes to the exhibitions based off of the collected visitor data.
