A museum display, including a small pistol in a case, a blown-up image of that pistol being used to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln, and a revised sign about the weapon. The sign stages, "A Single Shot To Display or Not to Display? After Booth killed Lincoln, the War Department kept the murder weapon. In 1931, they refused to display it and other items at Ford's Theatre, stating: '...the relics should not be allowed to be displayed to the public under any circumstances, on the theory that they would create interest in the criminal aspects of the great tragedy, rather than in the historical features thereof, and would have more of an appeal for the morbid or weak-minded than for the students of history. ... the Lincoln relics should not be placed upon exhibition anywhere.' The War Department transferred the gun to National Park Service in 1940. It has been displayed here since. How should museums display weapons of political violence? Tell us what you think!
